It’s hard to believe that Fall is already here!  This means blustery winds, warm sweaters, and the return of some of our favorite seasonal fruits and vegetables. While BBQ is on the SWEEETHEAT  menu all year long,  the entrance of Fall gives us a chance to get creative with some of the other special and delicious products in the SWEEETHEAT family. One product that has become a fan favorite for this time of year is our Smoked Apple Butter! As the name suggests, this is no ordinary apple butter. Our special recipe includes smoky undertones that pay homage to SWEEETHEAT’s BBQ roots. And while SWEEETHEAT Smoked Apple Butter is great as a spread on your toast, drizzled in your oatmeal or as a topping on your fresh-baked biscuits, our favorite way to use it is in our delicious and fluffy Smoked Apple Butter Pancakes. 

Our recipe for Smoked Apple Butter Pancakes takes the traditional pancake recipe and gives you all the seasonal feels! The perfect balance of sweetness and warm spices are showcased beautifully in these  hearty flapjacks. For an added bonus, our Smoked Apple Butter Pancakes are topped with a sweet apple compote made with a little bit of brown sugar and, you guessed it, a dab of SWEEETHEAT Smoked Apple Butter. Serve these fresh off the griddle, and drizzle with a little maple syrup just for tradition.

Smoked Apple Butter Pancakes with Apple Compote

Ingredients

  • 1¼ Cups All-Purpose Flour (sifted)
  • 1 Tablespoon Granulated Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Brown Sugar
  • 1 ½ Teaspoons Baking Powder
  • ½ Teaspoon Baking Soda
  • ½ Teaspoon Salt
  • ¼ Cup SWEEETHEAT Smoked Apple Butter
  • 1 Cup Buttermilk
  • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 2 Tablespoons melted Butter
  • 2 Tablespoons butter for griddle or skillet
  • 1 Egg

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Mix together the dry ingredients by adding the sifted flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt to a large bowl. Whisk until well combined.

Step 2

In a separate large bowl combine SWEEETHEAT Smoked Apple Butter, Buttermilk, Vanilla Extract, melted butter, and egg. Whisk until well combined.

Step 3

Fold the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The batter will be a little thick (you do not want it to be too runny).

Step 4

Add additional butter to a griddle or cast iron skillet on medium heat, and melt. Ensure the bottom of the pan is coated with butter. Ladle the pancake batter onto the skillet. Cook each side of the pancake for 3-5 minutes. Pancakes should be a golden brown color. While pancakes are cooking, make the apple compote.

Step 5

To make the apple compote, melt two tablespoons of butter in a pan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and SWEEETHEAT Smoked Apple Butter until all sugar has dissolved.

Step 6

Add diced apples to the pan and stir until evenly coated. Cook for 10 – 15 minutes until apples are soft. Serve on top of pancakes with a little maple syrup.
